46th National Safety Day… Weeklong Celebration of Safety

Remembrance and salute to the great thinkers, After the independence, there was rapid industrialization in our country, which also resulted in an increase in a number of accidents. At that time, there was no such body for guiding the industries on safety.

With increasing number of industrial accidents in the country, the labor minister's conference in its 22nd session 1962 recommended that "a conference on safety in factories should be convened and the question of setting up the National Safety Council for conducting a campaign on accident prevention should be considered."

This recommendation of the conference was approved by the 24th session of the standing labour committee, which met on 13th to 14th February 1966 at New Delhi under the chairmanship of late Shri Jagjivan Ram (Union Minister at that time), and the proposal concerning the constitution of National Safety Council (NSC) was set up on 4th March 1966 by the ministry.

Subsequently, it was decided that this day, 4th March, should be commemorated as National Safety Day every year in the form of National awareness campaign. Since 1972 the National Safety Day is celebrated every year throughout the country to reiterate the importance of safety and create an awareness campaign throughout the country. It was soon converted into a week-long event and was thus called National Safety Week (NSW).

Listed Few Activities undertaken on this day:
-          Poster and Banner making to promote safety are displayed in strategic locations.
-          Administration of safety pledge.
-          Unfurling of the NSD Flag
-          Pinning of the NSD Badge

-          Training program, workshops, demonstrations & seminars
-          Screening of safety films.
-          Community awareness programmes

National Safety Council is a premier, non-profit, self-financing, and tripartite apex body at the national level in India.  It is an autonomous body, which was set up by the Government of India, Ministry of Labour and Employment on 4 March 1966 to generate, develop and sustain a voluntary movement on Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) at the national level. It was registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and subsequently, as a Public Trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950.

The similar body also was formed in The United States of America, headquartered in Itasca Illinois, The National Safety Council (NSC) is a 501(C)(3), Non-profit, nongovernmental public services organization promoting health and safety. Founded in 1913 and granted a congressional charter in 1953.

Formation of such bodies for the industry is majorly focussing on regulating the need for safety. Law, enforcement is still not on a self-driven mode. We still feel what is required to be done legally we will comply to that but is it really helping us. Is it the correct direction to move on? Let’s join hands this Safety Day to pledge that let’s work for making processes safe, equipment safe, people safe. Let’s pledge to ensure safety truly becomes focus. We should not follow safety, we should adopt safety.

A Very Happy National Safety Day to all…
