Chemical safety

Chemical Safety Consciousness Sessions
Chemical Safety by HSE-RM Solutions, we design customized training programs, evaluation base certificate program.
Chemical Safety; Material Handling (Manual & Mechanized) ; Hazard Identification; HazOp; PSM (Process Safety Management); Work Place Safety; JSA (Job Safety Analysis); Operational, Maintenance & Safety; all designed customized training programs.

Chemical SafetyChemical safety is achieved by undertaking all activities involving chemicals in such a way as to ensure safety of health and environment.

Chemical industry is the fastest growing industry in the country, with its present share of about 40 per cent in the national gross industrial output. However, industrial activities involving hazardous chemicals have the potential to cause occupational diseases, injuries, in serious cases even death, besides pollution to the environment, if effective safety measures in the use of chemicals at workplace are not observed.

Objective of Consciousness Session

              Legislations on chemical safety
              Types of chemicals
              Classification of chemicals
              Health hazards of chemicals
              Route of entry of chemical
              Control strategy
              Personal protective equipment
              Chemicals fire and explosion hazards
Fire and explosion hazard control and prevention
              Hazard communication
              Material safety data sheet
              Material Handling

Labelling of chemicals (Hazard Communication)
-       Chemicals, when transferred to secondary bottles/cans, must be provided with proper labels.
-       Chemical formulae or short forms must not be used for labelling of the containers.
The label must contain: (Simplify Information)
·         the full name of the chemical,
·         its hazards,
·         information for safe handling and
·         the signage/pictogram indicating the hazard class.
-       Labels of bottles which got deteriorated or worn off must be replaced immediately.
-       Chemical bottles without labels or improper labeling can result in the wrong chemical being used.
-       Further, it will also cause difficulty in case of a spill or body contact or at the time of disposal of the chemical.

Initiators of Chemical Accidents
A number of factors including human errors could spark off chemical accidents with the potential to become chemical disasters. These are:
Process and Safety System Failures:
i)  Technical errors: design defects, fatigue, metal failure, corrosion etc.
ii) Human errors: neglecting safety instructions, deviating from specified procedures etc.
iii) Lack of information: absence of emergency warning procedures, nondisclosure of line of treatment etc.
iv) Organisational errors: poor emergency planning and coordination, poor communication with public, noncompliance with mock drills/exercises etc., which are required for ensuring a state of quick response and preparedness.

Sources of Chemical Disasters
Chemical accidents may originate in:
i)      Manufacturing and formulation installations including during commissioning and process operations; maintenance and disposal.
ii)     Material handling and storage in manufacturing facilities, and isolated storages; warehouses and godowns including tank farms in ports and docks and fuel depots.
iii)    Transportation (road, rail, air, water, and pipelines).

Causative Factors Leading to Chemical Disasters
Chemical disasters, in general, may result from:
i)              Fire.
ii)             Explosion.
iii)            Toxic release.
iv)            Poisoning.
Combinations of the above.
