TAKSHASHILA FIRE | A CERTIFICATE CANNOT KEEP AN EXIT CLEAR.
The Surat tragedy of 24 May 2019 claimed 22 lives. Inspection drives followed. Yet inspections reported in June 2026 again found missing emergency exits and non-working fire equipment.
The question remains: what happens between inspections?
HSE-RM SOLUTIONS | Our Perspective
Safety must become part of everyday operation.
1. Keep escape routes usable
Clear stairs, corridors and exits. Arrange classroom benches and shop stock so people can leave safely. Check before opening and after changes.
2. Control electrical hazards
Use properly rated wiring, suitable protective devices and effective earthing. Keep panels accessible. Record circuits and test results, and review capacity before adding AC or other equipment.
3. Put extinguishers within reach
In shops: at or beside the billing counter—or behind it only when visible and immediately accessible.
In classrooms: near the teacher’s desk in each room, with clear access and a safe escape route. Check these locations against the building’s overall protection needs.
People may instinctively try to escape. Prioritise the alarm and safe evacuation. Firefighting should be attempted only by trained users, on a small fire, while escape remains safe.
4. Make owners active participants
Our proposal: register each establishment on one portal and require owners themselves to upload dated photographs and a short monthly checklist.
Show exits, electrical access and fire-equipment condition. Record defects, correction deadlines and evidence of closure.
Provide guidance that teaches owners what to look for. Support submissions with spot checks, technical inspections and testing. Correct serious hazards immediately.
5. Retrofit responsibly
Assess older buildings individually. Obtain structural approval before drilling beams or columns. Keep required fire protection operational.
A monthly photo is useful when it leads to action. An inspection matters when defects are corrected and stay corrected.
Measure safety through clear exits, corrected electrical defects, working protection and prepared people.
IDENTIFY. CORRECT. VERIFY. MAINTAIN.
